International Folklore Festival “NINULLA” -Kosovo.
The festival is organized by SKOFF (National Section for the organization of folklore and traditional art
festivals) in close partnership with CIOFF® official partner in UNESCO.
THE FESTIVAL
The International Folklore Festival “NINULLA” -Kosovo takes place every year in the beautiful citi of Viti and in the Republic of Kosovo.
The originator of this grand festival, which brought together devotees of art and traditional culture and
folklore, was Mr. Arsim Abazi, who found the support of those who fervently love the sounds of musical
instruments, artistic vocals and cultural diversity. This festival also aims at promoting and preserving
traditional values and heritage – not only in the country, but also abroad; as well as the cultural
exchange between local and foreign artists.
The festival takes place every year and lasts for 6 days, between the dates of March 04 and March 09,
and it features 10 to 15 local and international traditional songs troupes. It exhibits around 15 shows
and special events occurring throughout the week. The festival attracts more than 10,000 people every
year.
The festival is managed by an organizational council and the members are appointed by the festival
director, who is supported by over 30 volunteers.
The first edition gathered artists from different countries of the world such as: Slovakia, Estonia,
Morocco, Northern Cyprus, Albania, North Macedonia and Kosovo
The Round Table
On the very first day of the festival, a round table conference is held with the participation of the
representatives of cultural heritage institutions, invited by the national sections of CIOFF®,
representatives of various troupes, representatives of festivals, individual artists, various guests from
around the world, wherein they discuss about a particular issue, which is chosen by the host
The purpose of the meeting is to increase cultural diversity and recognition between artistic
communities, cultural institutions, ensembles, individual artists to express their thoughts and
opportunities for the preservation of cultural heritage.
During the roundtable conference, various participating ensembles will parade briefly in their
traditional outfits, whereby they will exhibit costumography of their respective countries.
Visits to different places in Kosovo, the Church of Letnica in Viti, the beautiful historical city of Prizren
where they got to know the cultural heritage, the legendary Drenica where you can see up close what
happened during the war in Kosovo with the Jasharaj family, the capital of Pristina with its life and
dynamics.
THE AIM OF THE FESTIVAL
It aims to organize the international folklore festival for adults, minorities, local ethnic groups, with the
participation of various local and international ones folk groups from all over the world and to convey
messages of peace, love, mutual understanding and coexistence between the peoples of world, among
the participants. To preserve the cultural heritage by organizing intercultural performances dialogue
between different nationalities.
Specifically, the presentation of traditional folk songs of all communities such as Ninulla, wedding songs,
myth songs, polyphonic songs, typical traditional folk songs, acappella etc. accompanied by traditional
folk instruments, which must be performed in the most original possible version
SKOFF is a partner member of CIOFF
The International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Arts (CIOFF®) is indeed an
international nongovernmental organization (NGO) accredited by UNESCO, which consists of 103
member states, and it encompasses over 330 festivals and dance troupes' members. The NGO aims to
preserve and promote the pristine cultural heritage.
The area of Karadak mountain range:
The festival takes place in the area of Karadak mountain range, which encompasses the areas of several
cities and municipalities. The area known as the Mountain range of Karadak is known to be indeed a
treasure-trove of spiritual and folkloric heritage, with a special emphasis on men only traditional dances,
which is deemed as a real treasure of its own merit. In addition, sightseeing tour is organized, whereby
participants will visit the first school in native Albanian language in Kosovo, and a visit of the Catholic
Church at Letnica village, which is a world renowned church, where Mother Teresa started her holy
mission as a nun.
The criteria of the festival are:
Ensembles or artists must perform live, with typical traditional songs in the country where they live,
Ensembles or artists must be in traditional costumes.
Ensembles or artists are not accepted with elaborate songs
We have not defined the type of songs, they can perform: lullabies, traditional wedding songs, myth
songs, choral songs, polyphonic songs, acapella.
Ensembles or artists may have orchestras with traditional instruments.
